Lympstone Compost

Many residents have already kindly written letters to MPs, newspapers and DEFRA regarding the imposition of annual licence “exemption” fees. Nicky Scott, Devon’s Community Composting Co-ordinator, has contacted us to say that similar letters sent to Ben Bradshaw, who is the new Minister in DEFRA responsible for waste management, would be most helpful - even at this late stage.  Publicity in the recent BBC Politics Show, which featured the Lympstone site, highlighted the problems faced by community composters.    If you have time, please write to: Ben Bradshaw MP, Parliamentary Secretary, DEFRA, Room 7/H10 Ashdown House, 123 Victoria Street, LONDON SW1E 6DE or go to http://www.benbradshaw.co.uk/contact/contact.php  to find an email form.

As our Speaker was unable to come,  Miss Peggy Cook kindly stepped in at the last minute. She gave us a talk called 'Penny Pinching, and Pound Stretching', taking a lot of us back to WW2, shortages and how we, and our parents coped with rationing, and especially clothes rationing and those precious clothing coupons - very important to a young girl just starting out to work. Wages were very low in those days so there was a lot of 'penny pinching and pound stretching'. It was an interesting talk and she amused us with her droll comments, and her sense of humour. Mrs Pat Dearsly gave the Vote of Thanks, Mrs Jo Cotton, our President, read out this month's announcements, and Mrs Diana Budgen, Secretary took the names of those who wished to go on the outings. The Flower of the Month competition was won by Mrs Joan Denison. Next Month's meeting on Wednesday July 6th will be a talk on 'The History of Exeter' by Mrs Joan Soul.
