Cont PAGE 2 FROM THE EDITOR ENCLOSURES Please note, the Lympstone Herald will not normally carry attachments or enclosures. If the normal eight pages are insufficient then consideration will be given to increasing the size of the Herald. However, consideration must be given to those good people who quickly and accurately distribute 850 copies of our magazine every month. (Assistance is always welcome - if would like to help please call Jill Newton on 263809 or myself). SPACE FOR THE BAND Due to work being carried out in the Methodist Hall to install toilets etc (just like the Parish Church) the band is due to lose the space it currently has to store it’s instruments. Can you help? Do you have a little used garage or similar space? Percussion instruments are heavy so it should really be somewhere in the lower village. Nobody expects such space to be free – could you use some extra cash? The alternative might be Lympstone losing the band. BROADBAND UPDATE With the exception of just a few houses around Underhill and Clay Lane it seems that all houses in Lympstone should be able to connect to BT’s broadband service at 512k and possibly at 1Mb or even 2Mb. However, BT make no promises and if after three attempts they have not achieved what they consider to be a ‘good’ line, then they will withdraw the service. Talking to a BT engineer (very much off the record), it seems that many of the broadband faults in Lympstone are caused by poor internal wiring. So if you do have broadband installed and it falls over quite frequently for no apparent reason, then check that you have not got faulty connections (or missing filters or dodgy answering machines) connected to the same line. BT can install Service Specific front Plates (SSFP) if you have your PC close to the incoming line which will eradicate some problems but you will not be able to connect other PCs in your house directly to the broadband once this is done. For the technical, you are looking for a signal to noise ratio of greater than 20 decibels. Long term, BT is hoping replace connections between exchanges and the boxes in your street by fibre optics. Look for much bigger street boxes coming in during the next four years.
