Contents of the Herald

At a meeting of the full Parish council last month it was agreed that the number of pages in the Lympstone Herald would grow to twelve on a regular basis and that the range of contents would grow to include statistics (accounts) from the Parish Council, more readers’ letters (assuming we receive them), a Youth Section (come on you scouts, LYPS and others), Obituaries, and Births, Deaths and Marriages.  Although the B, D & Ms depend on us having a volunteer to collect and verify the information.  Might you be interested?

Julie Horwood agreed to update the list of contact details for Clubs and Societies held on the www.lympstone.org web site.

At a later meeting with Cllr Norris and Don Mildenhall it was also proposed that the format / typeface be updated.

All the above was dependant on the income from advertising meeting the cost of production (the Herald has been making a profit recently).

Comments on this issue of the Herald. which has been reformatted to fit the new style would be gratefully received.  Equally welcome would be articles for Readers letters or any other section.

We hope to reformat some of the advertisements in the next issue.

David Burton… A Short Tribute

It was with sadness, yet celebration of his life, that the village said Goodbye to David Burton, just before Christmas. David’s wish was to live out his retirement in Lympstone and, at 93, he almost did that.

He retired from the Crown Agents in London and settled here in 1973. He was keen to become an active member of the community and the list of his contributions is long. He served on the Parish Council for 14 years (Chair for 2 years); he was a member of the Lympstone Society (incl. treasurer, vice-chair) until he reached 83; he ran the Lympstone Singers; he gave illustrated talks about Dartmoor or local Flora and Fauna; he was a Bell-ringer for 26 years; in the 1980’s he led the Girl Guides on many10 mile Dartmoor Treks and he ran the school Chess Club, and more…

He also had a talent for photography and he has left a photographic history of village events and people, over 3 decades, to the Lympstone Society.

He was most widely known as original Editor of the Lympstone Herald… for over 21 years. He only had a typewriter and Tippex so it took him 3 days a month…plus collating and delivering his share. He served the community in so many ways.

In his personal autobiography he wrote “moving to Devon proved to be one of the happiest decisions of my life”.  He will be missed greatly.
