 A small café in Venice

A new Café Theatre presentation has just been announced by The Lympstone Players. As a follow-up to their popular production of a Molière play, they will be presenting an Italian comedy by the Venetian playwright, Carlo Goldoni.  Set in a small square in Venice during carnival, Il Campiello is like an 18th century East Enders, a slice of working class life with its noise, its fights, its gambling, its singing, its dancing, its humour and its love stories. A street carnival band marches through the action, and an impoverished Neapolitan Count comes in search of a wife with a dowry. Harland Walshaw will direct, John Welton will assemble the band, and Shirley Wilkes will cook the Italian meal which will form part of the evening’s entertainment. A cast of eleven actors has been assembled. Café Theatre turns the village hall into an atmospheric café with tables surrounding the thrust stage, and a licensed bar. The production is scheduled for the middle of May, and tickets are likely to go on sale at the beginning of April.

There was a very good attendance at our February meeting to hear Mrs Dawn Canhay speak on theatre costumes.  Her interest in these had started in an amateur way many years ago but gradually progressed into a full time professional job after taking an intensive course.  She explained how some costumes are hired because it is cheaper, some are made by freelance costumiers and others by in-house staff.  She brought with her a stand of beautiful costumes she had made for various eras.  She said corsets are apparently very comfortable to wear and aided posture - we agreed with the latter, but were not convinced about the former when we saw the size!  Mrs Joyce Perry gave the vote of thanks.

The Secretary read out various notices of forthcoming events and welcomed one new member.  Members were reminded to bring plates and cutlery for the February lunch (on Thursday, 16th) at the Methodist Hall (12 noon for 12.30). The draw for the Denman College bursary was won by Mrs Robbie Eyre, with Mrs Diana de la Rue in reserve place.  The Flower of the Month competition winner was Mrs Eva Glover and Miss Patricia Hancock received the raffle prize. Mrs Joan Denison was thanked for organising the January dinner and quiz at The Globe. The next meeting on 1st March will be "Fitness is Fun".  Come and see!

The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe -- Thursday Friday Saturday 16,17, & 18 February

Hurry! Hurry! Hurry! Down to the post office for your tickets if you have not already got them.Tickets have been going fast for the Lympstone Player's latest production so don't leave it too late.  There is a matinee performance on Saturday as well as an evening one.

Director Clive Wilson says: 'This is a very ambitious production, based on the stage version   specially written for the Royal Shakespeare Company in which music and song add a further dimension to this now classic allegorical tale.  We have the same strong musical team we had last year, plus a large cast with a good mix of both new and more familiar faces.  These include three generations of one family in the village which may be a first for the Players!  Those who know the story will realise how important the four children are throughout and we are lucky in having some really talented youngsters at the moment.  They and all the others in the cast have worked terrifically hard in rehearsals starting last October. The play requires some strong dramatic effects involving sound and lighting and inventive staging, costumes and scenery. and I have been enormously helped by a strong backstage team . We have tried to rise to the challenge, so please do come and see!' Please remember that the Thursday and Friday evening performances start at 7 p.m not 7.30pm The matinee on Saturday starts at 2 p.m. and the evening performance at 7:30 p.m..

One member of the cast has a very severe nut allergy so please do not bring any nuts, or  products containing nuts with you as they can pose a serious and immediate threat to her health.

Over 70 Children Attend An Evening at LYPS

The Youth Club re-opened after the Christmas break on 13th January with a junior session 5pm – 6.45pm and a senior session following it. 48 children attended the junior session and 30 attended to senior session. Junior LYPS takes place on the first Friday of each month for 7 – 11 year olds. Our youth leaders Veronica Clancy and Zena Tarbath organise lots of activities including crafts, cooking, sports , discos etc. Parents must sign their children in and out and children are not allowed to leave without an adult collecting them. Senior LYPS ( 11 – 18 year olds) have welcomed two new staff: Veronica Clancy has taken over from Sue as Youth Leader although it is hoped Sue will still be involved with LYPS when her new job allows. Ian Dovey has also just joined us and has too many sporting qualifications to mention so will be a great asset to us. The first outing of the year took a group of Senior LYPS members to the pantomime in Exmouth. Two of our staff accompanied them. This trip was kindly donated by the Lympstone Language School who also provided transport.

We are looking for a pay as you go mobile phone to keep at the youth hut in case of emergency. If you have an old mobile of this type and would consider donating it to us, please could you phone Jane on 279952.
