Cycle Path - Now the good news! The figures which I used for projections for our path are unrepresentative.  Contrary to what I had been told, the Camel Trail is nothing like the path proposed here so that the user mix and numbers using the path will not be similar.

Last week I took a trip to Cornwall to see the Camel Cycle Path for myself and what I learnt was very interesting. The path begins at Padstow - a small fishing village on a shallow estuary with not much entertainment except eating and drinking. If you were on holiday there and wanted to go for a walk you would find yourself following the path up the estuary and out of town.  (In Exmouth one can walk along the promenade.)

The Camel Trail also starts at the other side of a car park from the village centre – a little like Exmouth’s bus station car park. For a few miles this path follows the estuary along an old railway cutting to a village called Wadebridge – similar to the proposed path from Exmouth to Lympstone. But from Wadebridge to Poley’s Bridge, the other twelve miles of the path, the scenery is very different.

There the line runs through a narrow valley in neglected woodland following what would have been a very delightful railway track linking a series of very small hamlets. There are several exits from the track – usually near a pub which benefit greatly from the custom, a landlord told me.

Many of the users of the path were local residents and many of the walkers and several cyclists had dogs – (there are even dog carriers for rent with the cycles!).  Horse riders also use the path.

In summary, on the day I visited there were fewer cyclists than walkers and many only used short sections of the path although all would be counted in the thousand users a day claimed by the local district council.

WI

Mrs Mary Andrews, WI County Adviser, came to our May meeting to address the two resolutions for the AGM in Cardiff next month, when Mrs Beryl Grooms will be our delegate.  There was much debate about both. The first was "Renewable Energy", and Mrs Andrew went through the options of solar, wind and hydro-electric power and geothermal generated electricity.  The second resolution "Sport for a Healthy Population" had three sections - to reverse the decline in sport in schools, provide more recreational amenities and to encourage participation in sport for all age groups because of the known benefits.

On a lighter note, the WI Drama Group then performed two short but very funny sketches - Both had a moral!

The business section started with Mrs Mary Nightingale's very comprehensive report on the Spring Council. Members were delighted to hear that the Story Sacks were to be repeated.  In 1997/98 WIs had provided 140 of these for placement in Devon Libraries and they had been so successful that some had actually worn out!  They consist of an attractive sack filled with a story book and games, hand made toys and various things to help children interact with the story.

Reflexology will be the next subject on Wednesday, 7 June.
