Tel: Maureen Conibere 276277 Lympstone History Society The Lympstone Society is no more, long live the Lympstone History Society! At the AGM, a smooth transformation from latter to former took place, the new chairman, Don Mildenhall explaining the refocusing of the aims and objectives of the society. These are: practical work, support for those recording the history of the village and for the archives plus a programme of allied events. Gratitude was expressed to Joyce Malster, stepping down as acting Chairman, and Julie Horwood the extremely hard-working retiring Secretary. The new Committee will be meeting for the first time in early June after which more information will be available to members. Don Mildenhall SHOPS SUPPORTERS CLUB At the AGM on the 15th of May it was agreed that the club’s activity were proceeding very steadily with nearly half its planned fifteen years gone. However there is still about £25,000 to distribute back to those who lent the money to help with conversion of the shops to give us the Londis we now have. To celebrate the half way point it was agreed that there should be some kind of celebration and Mary and Ken Williams suggested that the club could have some sort of party with a tasting of many of their products as its central theme. A newsletter to celebrate this and also as a means of trying to locate some of the members who have moved was suggested. Ed. Open Day The History Society and The Landmark Trust have joined forces to open Peters Tower on Thursday May 24th 10:00 - 16:00. This is the first time in many years that there's been a chance for the public to see inside the Tower. The small rooms might mean there's a queue, but it's well worth seeing. Don Mildenhall
This year is the 70th Anniversary of the Furry Dance, which will be held in the village on Saturday, August 4. The Fete (including car boot sale), Dog Show and Fancy Dress Competition will be in Candy’s Field. Bookings are being taken now for stalls and stands.

Clarefest 2007 will happen this year on June 3rd from 13.30pm until 19.30pm at West Wing, Varnes, Church Road (opposite the Redwing). A selection of live music and fundraising as usual. Entry donation of £6 will be distributed between Macmillan, Hospiscare and the ‘Force’ cancer charity. Nick Millington GOOD NEWS FOR FILM ENTHUSIASTS This autumn will see the start of the first season of screenings in the village hall by the newly-formed Lympstone Film Society. A programme is being drawn up to run from September/October to around Easter-time 2008. The aim is to present the best examples from categories including recent successes that didn't win a showing locally, top-rated foreign films, classics from the past that never date and award-winning short films; solemnity and worthiness will not be the criteria for selection and humorous films will regularly feature. LFS evenings will also be social events with the bar open to aid lively discussion of the films shown. Read the Lympstone Herald for news of the opening of membership lists and the film night dates to put in your diary. John Eaton-Terry |
