Tony Millington

We wish to thank the village for the many words and actions of support offered after the death of our Dad, Tony Millington. We have collected about £400 after the funeral that we will split equally, and donate to the ‘Clarefest Charities’ (Hospiscare SW, Macmillan SW, and FORCE Cancer, Exeter). We are aware that we were not able to collect all of the donations at the service, so if anyone would still like to make a donation to these worthy causes please send cheques (payable to either Macmillan SW, Hospiscare or Force) to Nick Millington, 6 Harefield Cottages, Lympstone, EX8 5EX. Thanks again, Nick, Chris & Polly Millington.

DEVON CONSUMER WATCH SCHEME

Devon County Council Trading Standards Service want to recruit more volunteer Consumer ‘Watchdogs’ who will look out for rip-off traders in their communities.  ‘Watchdogs’ receive basic training in consumer law, and keep a look out in their local community for sharp trading practices, illegal goods and rip-off traders such as bogus door-to-door salesmen and tarmac gangs.  ‘Watchdogs’ are then able to pass information to Trading Standards Officers who can take appropriate action.  ‘Watchdogs’ also give their views on the development of service planning and delivery, helping the Trading Standards Service to be even more responsive to local needs.

Trading Standards believe ‘Watchdogs’ can make a significant impact on consumer protection in Devon, giving communities a stronger voice in local affairs and making our environment a safer place to work and shop.  The aim is to enlist at least one volunteer from each Parish in Devon to act as our ‘eyes and ears’ in the county.

So if you’re interested in joining the scheme please contact the Watchdog Coordinator at Devon Trading Standards on 01392 381381 or go to www.devon.gov.uk/watchdogs where you will find information.

 Interesting Courses in Lympstone

WEA courses are so much more than just listening to an enthusiastic expert
in his or her subject.  The WEA   employs tutors, as opposed to teachers or lecturers, so your input and others' to the conversation is enriching.  Most
likely you will meet friends and make new ones.  We have experts who can
lead on many subjects including specialist local interest but who expect you to bring your knowledge to the fore.  Why go to Exeter or Exmouth, when we can do it in the Village Hall!  We do need a minimum of 12 to have a course run. Bird watching, is likely to continue from last term, Tuesdays 2pm-4. Your local contact: Richard Crisp, 17 Birch Road, 273211

 Lympstone Twinning Association

We reflect on the sad loss of our first President, Tim Tapscott and convey our sympathies to Pat, but we also celebrate Tim's unsurpassed long and
committed enthusiasm, work and support for Lympstone Twinning.  A founder and original Chairman of the start-up Committee in 1976 and during the first exchanges that followed his enthusiasm and support never wavered.  He would be pleased to hear that we have attracted some new members recently and that profits from the once again sold-out  'Jazz Brunch' will help fund our hosting of the French in May 08. Our forthcoming events are as follows:
Social & AGM Wednesday 19th December 7.30pm in the Sailing Club
Après Noël Party Sunday 6th January noon in the Village Hall.
Please contact Brian Cotton 278631 for any further information.

 LYMPSTONE COMPOST

The Christmas tree collection will be on Wednesday 9th January - please put trees out on the Tuesday evening.   Trees will be collected from non-subscribers as well as from subscribers.

A numbers of volunteers have retired this year and unless new volunteers come forward for the 2008 season the subscription will have to be increased in order to pay for an extra worker.  Your New Year Resolution is to do your bit to help this worthwhile village service.   Contact any of the committee or phone 275538 to see how you can help.

TRIAL RUN FOR FILM MATINEES

The Lympstone Film Society  is pressing ahead with its plan to screen classic films appropriate for older audiences in the afternoon.  The first matinee show will be in the Village Hall Function Room at 2pm on Wednesday 23rd January, with others to follow on 27th February and 26th March.  After that LFS will decide if the response warrants continuing with matinee screenings. The audience won't be asked to join the Society and can come to the films on a one-off basis.  A voluntary donation of £2 per show should cover the Society's expenses - including transport if needed by any elderly or disabled person to and from the shows. January's Herald will give details of the films chosen for the first three matinees.

Members will be enjoying a 'Black and White' evening on 14th December, dressing accordingly to watch films starring the Marx Brothers and Buster Keaton.
