Next PAGE 2 WI Our first speaker of the New Year was David Daniel. His subject was "The Revitalisation of Seaside Towns" (Teignmouth, Dawlish, Exmouth, Budleigh Salterton and Sidmouth). From the beginning of the 18th century it became popular for the well-to-do to visit these places for cures, especially invalides. He showed slides of lithographs, some by the prodigious writer and sketcher Rev John Swete from Dawlish in 1795. His talk was devoted to the styles of architecture during the Regency period, pointing out the different types of windows and roofs and the reasons for them. He was thanked by Bobby Brunt. The President gave details of the forthcoming Lympstone WI events and the Secretary, Diana Budgen, gave a list of outings further afield. 32 members paid their subscriptions and it is hoped more will be forthcoming next month. They arrive midday on Thursday 8th May and depart early Sunday morning. Don Mildenhall CHILDREN'S SOCIETY This month there will be no family service, the next will be February 10th at 4 pm. Last year the church held a number of meetings about re-ordering. Several things were suggested such as changing the position of the altar and raising the dais so the congregation would be able to see better. The possibility of replacing the pews, just like ‘The Archers’ storyline, brought letters of both protest and support. The first change has now taken place with the altar move and it being raised. At the moment this is an experiment so come and have a look and let us know what you think. The coffee mornings, open to all, continue on Tuesday 22nd January but please check details which will appear under the railway arch..
