Next PAGE 3 LYMPSTONE ENTERTAINMENTS Conjuring Comedy reviewed by Jenny Clark One has become used to leaving a village hall event with one’s face and stomach muscles aching a little, usually through overeating at one of the village events. However 14th February the strain was caused by laughing. Ian Keable produced an excellent performance on St Valentine’s night, keeping the packed house intrigued and amused. Ian, a comedian and magician, performs baffling sleight of hand with a dry wit and quick repartee. His sober appearance in a pin-striped suit is, he claims, a throwback to his time spent as an accountant. An ex-accountant performing magic tricks? One could have been forgiven for assuming that this would not be an evening of fun. Wrong! Ian Keable’s skilful act began with quiet self-deprecation and developed through some clever audience involvement to end with a spectacular illusion with two willing villagers participating on stage. Quite how he managed to achieve the response of these ‘helpers’ (maybe hypnosis?) we shall never know. However his gentle teasing of the audience was in good spirit and his chance selection of a dentist and a doctor to assist with his show added fuel to his wit. This was the first presentation by Lympstone Entertainments with backing from Villages in Action; as a premiere it leaves us eagerly awaiting the next event. John Eaton-Terry writes: Jenny wasn’t the only member of the audience to tell us how much they enjoyed this event. Our next date is Saturday 15th March when we shall be bringing to Lympstone the wonderful Puppet State Theatre Company’s production of The Man Who Planted Trees. A magical show that will appeal particularly to children, it starts at 2pm in the Village Hall. Tickets for this classic environmental fable, which we are able to present thanks to support from Villages in Action, are now on sale at the Post Office. John Eaton-Terry LONDIS NEWS Our Lympstone Londis was winner in it’s class at Harrogate last week. The church AGM will be on Wednesday 16th April at 7.45pm for what could be the last time in the Church Room (again!). Brian Mather WI The title for the March meeting "Blanket Collage" did not do justice to the speaker. Mrs Madeleine Millington, a very talented lady from Exeter, spoke of how she started with a City & Guilds course at Guildford fourteen years ago to make a collage stitched on to an old dyed blanket, depicting life in Lapland. She came with many fine examples of her work which is shown in many parts of the country. What sounded like a rather bland "picture" was, in fact, an extremely colourful and beautifully stitched work in a multitude of shapes based on a definite theme. She was thanked by Mrs Anne Frampton for an enthralling ¾-hour. The delicious February lunch made an overall profit of £92.60 for our funds. All helpers were thanked. Diana de la Rue drew members' attention to the map of Wellington produced by Iris Walker to commemorate her WI's centenary in Canada. The Secretary read out notices of forthcoming County events and our Social Secretary gave details of our own outings.
