SCOUTS APPEAL FOR HELP
Could you lead a group of 10-14 year old boys in some fun activities once a week? Lympstone's Sea Scout troop is appealing for help to prevent the temporary closure of the group. After 15 years continuous service Scout Leader Mike Hales needs to take a break, and someone is needed to lead the troop in his absence. The troop has its own headquarters (the Scout hut on Cliff Field), access to boats if there is qualified adult help, and a group of lively and enthusiastic young people. If you think you could help to prevent a hiatus in the history of Scouting in Lympstone, which stretches back to 1912, please call Mike on 01392 270623. Grace Packman POLICE MATTERS I am pleased to announce that the new Neighbourhood Beat Manager for Lympstone has now started and is already making good progress in the village. Footpaths. We continue to receive complaints regarding the poor condition of the Clay Lane footpath; this is one several paths that we are treating as projects and we are liasing with Devon County Council to agree a programme of work to improve the drainage and resurface the path. We hope to provide a full report next month. Rubbish bins. The two damaged bins under the railway bridge have been replaced as has the bin in Candy’s Field; we have a bin available for the play area to be installed within the month and further improvements will be undertaken when the new financial year starts in April. Candy’s Field Oak Tree. We are pleased to report our independent arboriculturalist has confirmed that, ‘provided the tree is managed so that the regrowth is in step with the crown framework the tree could be kept indefinitely’. We now need to agree with the East Devon Tree Warden the scale of work recommended which will reduced the size to between 8 and 11 metres, at which point we will seek prices for the work. Action list update. Full report is on council notice boards. Bus shelter- Meeting Lane, Peter Acca has obtained an improved price for the panels and the council meeting approved the budget, work to commence shortly. Football Posts- We are sorry to report that all the footballs post in Candy’s Field have failed safety inspections, and will need to be taken down. We appreciate that they are used and we are considering if we can reseat the two that make up the pitch, the third post is beyond repair and will be removed immediately. Bench refurbishment- with the good weather you may have noticed that work has started at The Saddlers Arms junction where restoration of the pump has commenced before work continues with bench refurbishment. We wish, again, to thank Chris Masterson for his voluntary effort; which is very much appreciated. Anything we are not looking after? please let us know, thanks. Cllr Miles Freeman. Toby Ingham and John Goss-Cu
After lying dormant for ten years, Lympstone Cricket Club was reborn last year with 20 villagers playing in five matches – it would have been eight but for rain. It was a trial year to see if there was enough support to keep the Club going. There is, although we didn’t win as many matches as we would have liked. But it’s early days yet! This year, we have a fixture list of 12, with ten 20-20 evening matches and two Sunday 40-40 matches. Come and support us! Our home ground is at Woodbury Cricket Club. Ask me for the whereabouts of away grounds. We have a keen group of 20 players but we would love to have more. Contact me if you are interested! Annual membership fee is £5 for adult players and £3 for juniors (under 18). We practice in nets in Lympstone one evening a week – usually Tuesdays. Ask me for time and place if you want to join in or have a look at us. The Club had no kit when we started last season. Some money was left over from 10 years ago with which we bought essentials, such as match balls. But due to lack of funds, we had to ask other clubs to give us stuff they were throwing out! So we have some rather tired pads and some spongy or cracked bats that don’t make scoring easy! Players match fees go on pitch hire. If you would like to encourage us with a donation to buy some new bats and pads, that would be marvellous and a very great help and very much appreciated! WEARING PURPLE In a recent poll, the Nation’s Favourite Poem was found to be Warning: When I am an old woman, which famously begins: “When I grow old I shall wear purple…” and is now an international bestseller. It was written by Jenny Joseph, who is coming to Lympstone Village Hall on Saturday, 5th April to give a reading of her work. Tickets from Lympstone Post Office or phone 263928. She has been writing poetry since the 1950s, and has won many major awards. She has also been a newspaper reporter, the landlady of a London pub, and a writer of children’s books. A recent publication, Led by the Nose, is a memoir of a year in her garden. The Daily Telegraph spoke of her ‘dry wit and acute feeling for the comedy of things’, and the Lympstone audience can look forward to an entertaining evening. In a relaxed café-type atmosphere, there will be refreshments available from a licensed bar. This is the first of several evenings with writers that Lympstone Entertainments is planning.
