ITEMS OF NOTE From the Parish Council Meeting September

 Parish Council Vacancy

Everyone should know that there is a vacancy on the Parish Council.  Notices have been posted on all the Parish Council notice boards.

Under the Election Rules, if 10 electors request an election then the Returning Officer at East Devon District Council has to organise one.  The Herald can confirm that a request has been made and therefore a formal election will be held to fill the vacancy.  The procedure is the same as for the elections in May.  No details have been announced but if anyone is interested in standing they should request a candidates pack rather than waiting for formal notices.

 Village Hall Refuse

This has been causing some problems this summer.  The Refuse vehicle used by the Contractor (Veolia) cannot get to the Village Hall because of bad parking on School Hill.  This means that rubbish is left to rot and attract vermin such as seagulls and rats.  We don't want these in the Village Hall where school children will eat, play and learn.  So if you park on School Hill, please make sure that your vehicle is left very close to the wall.

Another Contractor has offered to collect all the waste in a smaller vehicle if it is all bagged before it is put in the skip.  Anything that is not bagged will not be collected and will be allowed to rot.  Is this a realistic option?  Please let the Clerk, Tony Le Riche know whether you think this is workable.

Clerk to the Council: A J Le Riche, DMS,  43 Salisbury Road, Exmouth, EX8 1SL, Tel 279665/ 07866 535580 lympstonepc@leriche6.wanadoo.co.uk

    From The Editor

I am sad to have to report three deaths. The first being the President of Lympstone Sailing Club, Dick Middleton, a constant supporter of the club's activities and welfare, a character who will be very much missed.

The second was Tony Clark, a family man, Chairman of the Planning Committee of the Parish Council, and a prominent member of the Sailing Club - being responsible for much of the training which has happened there recently.  He was a big friendly man (and a regular deepwater cruising companion of mine). Many will miss him.

The last but by no means least was Orlando Burton. Alan wrote – “Sally, Leonie and I are very grateful for all the support, sympathy and kindness we are receiving following the death of baby Orlando”. All deaths are sad but the younger the person the more it seems we regret their passing.

Hedges

The weather this summer seems to have produced an abundant amount of foliage and as a result, many of the signs which are close to hedges have been overgrown. If you have a hedge or tree which has grown over the road or pavement and perhaps is obscuring a sign then now is the time to cut it back.  With the onset of cooler weather rapid growth should now have finished and you should not have to do it again until this time next year.

LUCKY LYMPSTONE

Friendly competition for an increasing population and better access links (think what will happen when the cycle track opens) are improving the quality and range of food and restaurants open in Lympstone.

The pubs are already aware of this. The Swan has a very wide selection of seafood and currently an excellent wine list: the Redwing has a good a la carte menu plus well known specials (plus regular live entertainment).  The Globe provides good home-cooked food and The Saddlers provides steaks “like your mother did”. The Globe even makes dishes like the ones you ate as a child with specialty dishes like Liver and Bacon and pies on the 19th of September – the start of a season of “Home Cooked Food”. Shears Place Café is becoming increasing popular.
