 1ST LYMPSTONE SEA SCOUTSSOS

Can anyone offer their help to raise funds for the Scouts or to include them on their list of charities worth supporting?

The Scouts are struggling to find members willing to serve on their group committee. Jobs include treasurer, chairman and committee members.

The important function of the committee is to raise funds - the troop needs £2,000 a year to survive. The Scouts are hoping to do some of their own fundraising at the forthcoming Furry Dance celebrations by running some stalls but they need more.

While the search goes on for funding and helpers, the Scouts have been busy on many activities based at their headquarters on Cliff Field. During the recent annual Woodjam festival, a Lympstone team finished runners-up against 12 teams from all over East Devon.

They currently have three leaders but that will drop to one in the summer. If there is anyone out there interested in helping lead the troop, please get in touch with Pete Hardy at 01395 270157.

LOCAL GOVERNMENT FOR DEVON

The Government have ordered the Boundary Commission to review and make recommendations on the way Devon is administered.  Their proposals are contained in a 47 page document that can be accessed at

www.electoralcommission.org.uk/boundary-reviews/all-reviews/south-west/devon/devon-structural-review

Whatever happens there will be change and it will be radical.  You are urged to understand these proposals and make your views known to the Boundary Commission.

Lympstone Parish Council will be debating the proposals and formulating their official response at a special meeting on Monday 4th August at 7.30 in the Village Hall. You are welcome to attend.

  Cllr Rob Longhurst

NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH

The police say that if you get a caller from the Utilities which you are not sure about, do not trust the phone number they give you to verify their credentials. Always ring the number from your account or the phone book. The police example applies to  the water company but it applies to all Utility Companies.

LYMPSTONE CRICKET CLUB

Lympstone’s three matches in June were a case of nearly, nearly, then yes!

In the first match – at Newton Poppleford – the bowlers made a good start.  The home side were restricted to 42-5 with more than half the overs gone, on an artificial strip that kept deceptively low.  Poppleford’s middle order then made amends, setting Lympstone the modest target of 108.  Modesty overwhelmed our batsmen, however, and they were skittled out for 39 in under 13 overs – even top scorer Toby Ingham (14) finding scoring difficult.

CRICKET FIXTURE LIST

Thursday 31st July                            Newton Poppleford      HOME                       6.00

Sunday 3rd August                            Argyle Road                  HOME                      2.30

Friday 15th August                            Sunset                            AWAY                      6.00

Thursday 21st August                       Fabermaunsell XI          HOME                      6.00

Sunday 7th September                      Branscombe CC            AWAY                      2.3

The following week at the Coaver Club it was the turn of Lympstone’s batsmen to shine – 156 for 7 being their biggest total since the Club reformed last year.  Captain Jonno Lee led the way with 62, Toby Ingham chipping in with a typically brisk 46.  Sadly, their record score was not enough.  Home team

The Geriatrics knocked off the runs with six wickets and two overs to spare – no doubt finding 18 wides from the village bowlers a help!  Then at last it happened!  Playing Newton St Cyres team Heads & Quicks at Woodbury, home team Lympstone decided to play well with ball and bat in the same match – and found it a winning formula.  Three of the five bowlers managed a maiden over, with miserly Paul Jordan only going for 7 runs in his four overs, and young Charlie Lenygon amassing 3-10 in his.  The batsmen, with only 98 to win, got off to a slow start, but once opener Greg Richmond  started to accelerate towards an unbeaten 49, it was game on.  Harland Walshaw’s supporting 23 was all class – but all run.  Thoroughly puffed, hero Harland got himself very deliberately stumped to let Lenygon come in and clout a winning six in the penultimate over.  Lympstone had won their first game in two seasons!

 STATION IN BLOOM!

Thanks to a real Lympstone community effort, the station is looking much better now.  Train operator First Great Western’s station adoption scheme, launched at a well attended meeting in the Village Hall, has to date resulted in eighteen Lympstone residents having a safety briefing and being issued with a “station adopters” luminous yellow vest.

Parish Council Chairman Pete Acca has repaired the planters on the platform, a water storage tank has been installed with help from Nick Millington, Dave Tyrell has filled it with water and Lympstone Compost scheme have donated compost.

The Garden Club agreed a scheme and have planted nine planters.  They also undertake a watering rota, including two splendid hanging baskets.  All the flowers were purchased from Lympstone Nurseries and paid for by First Great Western.

Outside the station the overgrown embankment was strimmed by volunteers Chris Barnacle and Richard Crisp, revealing the remains of a set of steps that used to lead to the station buildings.  Gardener Dawn Chapman offered to turn them into a horticultural feature – and King’s Garden Centre have generously donated all the materials and plants.

The result is super.  In the fullness of time the “Friends of Lympstone Village Station” hope to do more to make the embankment an attractive entrance to the village for people using train or, eventually, the cycle path.

 LYMPSTONE HISTORY SOCIETY

This summer we are again running Village Walks for visitors and residents alike. These give an insight into life in the village 100 years ago as well as looking at local landmarks. This year, starting on 13 and 18 July, we will have some 'low-tide' walks round to Parsonage Stile. Details will be on our notice board and posters.
