Next PAGE 3 LYMPSTONE ENTERTAINMENTS Our next presentation will be worlds away from the music recently heard in the Parish Church when we brought an eight-man Georgian choir to sing and dance before a large and eager audience (thirty or so of whom had earlier enjoyed a workshop, learning to perform this challenging vocal material) drawn from Lympstone and much farther afield. But on Saturday 27th September, to conclude our Summer Music series, it will be one of Britain's leading chamber ensembles, the "superb Bridge Quartet" (Michael Kennedy, Sunday Telegraph) in the church to perform works by Beethoven, Bridge and Schubert . Not only celebrated for their recitals and their recordings, the members of the Bridge Quartet are highly respected as coaches on courses such as the Dartington International Summer School as well as others throughout Europe. Their pioneering educational work has won several awards and was featured on BBC Television. Their acclaimed recordings, particularly of the complete quartets by their namesake, the British composer Frank Bridge (1879-1941), have led to invitations to tour internationally, including the USA, Switzerland, Croatia and this season in Italy, Spain and France. Tickets at £10 each for the Bridge Quartet's welcome appearance in the village will be on sale at Lympstone Post Office by the end of July; or telephone me on 277501. To follow this beginning to our autumn season, Lympstone Entertainments will be staging more music in contrasting genres; another puppet show for young families; a dramatic portrayal of a Hollywood star and another in our sequence of Encounters with Authors. So there's much to look forward to.

We apologise for not collecting your garden waste on 25th June which was due to the driver, Chris Barnacle, being admitted to hospital much sooner than expected. As a result, alternative arrangements could not be made at such short notice. We very much appreciate subscribers being so understanding of the situation especially as the refuse collectors took some of the bags of garden waste on the Friday. If anyone is still short of empty Piglet bags please telephone 275538. To compensate for the hiccup in the service we propose extending the season by one week, ie. the last collection will be on Weds, 5th Nov. Compost and mulch may be ordered at the Post Office by anyone in Lympstone and will be delivered to your address asap on a Wednesday. May your garden flourish. Jenepher Allen

We are pleased to report that the full council approved all the seven resolutions below submitted by the committee: 1. There will be an open evening on the 23rd of October where we will present our proposal for flood contingency planning and you will have a chance to chat with ourselves, the Environment Agency and others involved. Formal notice will follow. 2. Ian Herbert has been appointed to be our Flood Wardens coordinator and will be in touch shortly to seek volunteer assistance. 3. Sand is to be acquired for the bins and we are going to see if we can get a free supply, any ideas? 4. We agreed ‘in principle’ to acquire a portable high capacity water pump and we are now pursuing DCC and The Fire Authority for a pump or funding. 5. Two benches, two litter bins and one dog bin will be purchased. The best price specification reported last month was incomplete but with a final price of £1473 the budget of £1486 remains intact. 6 We will contact the Probation Service to see if they can provide some willing helpers to assist with additional path clearance projects. 7. Financial authority for the approved Amenities budget has been delegated to the committee. The drainage work in The Strand should have been completed by the time you read this and we would like to thank you for your patience. Many of you suffered secondary problems with late refuse collections and we have expressed your dissatisfaction to EDDC; we have now established much better communications to avoid such confusion in the future. With some good weather we hope to make a serious start on path restoration starting with Clay Lane clearance and surveying this week. We still don’t have any work schedule for the Parish Lengthsman so if you find a path overgrown please let us know. Finally, don’t forget the Action List on the notice boards if you want to know what we are up to! Cllr Miles Freeman. WI The Life and Times of a Queen's Trumpeter" was Mr Peter Cripps' subject when he spoke at our June meeting. He started playing the trumpet at the age of 7 and joined the Army on Boy Service when only 14½ years old, but his standard of playing was such that when still in his teens he was chosen from hundreds of people auditioning to be one of the eight trumpeters at the Queen's Coronation. He described the sumptuous tea at Buckingham Palace at the end of Coronation Day (rationing still being in place) and meeting the Queen when she was still attired in her Coronation robes. He went on to describe his rise through the ranks and the highlights of his long military career. He ended by demonstrating his brass instruments and playing two pieces on them. He was thanked by Miss Ruth Wilson. Our President, Jo Cotton, reported on the National AGM held at Liverpool earlier this month. It was an exciting experience for her and the afternoon speaker, Sandi Toksvig, was hiliarious. The draw for the Denman Bursary took place after her report and to her delight Jo was the winner with Maura Johnson in reserve place. Many forthcoming events were announced, some of which are: 16 July - WI Summer Supper/Social at Village Hall 7 for 7.30 2 August - Serving teas at the Furry Dance 1 pm onwards 20 August - next Committee meeting at Adrienne Hebdige's house There is no meeting in August. On Wednesday, 3 September Mr McShaw will speak on "Your Eyes and You" - an important subject with which to start the Autumn programme. Diana de la Rue.

Sea Sunday It was good to see over 80 attend the service on a blustery Sunday afternoon to sing with the Lympstone SW Telecoms Training Band and hear children relating the story of the MS Napoli to illustrate the work of the Mission to Seafarers which benefited from the event. Rev Geoffrey Wrayford spoke with knowledge of his recent experience helping to crew a tall training ship on a trans-Atlantic crossing Churchyard to Close? No it does not mean that the churchyard will be closed for access, just not available for any more burials. Basically it’s full and the church has decided that it is time to hand on the maintenance to the East Devon Council who do a great job at Woodbury, the nearest ‘closed’ churchyard to Lympstone. So the Rector, Father John Clapham has written: Just to let you know that we are considering beginning the process to ‘close’ the Lympstone churchyard to new burials. There haven’t been any for many years (except in existing graves), so in many ways this is a formal action of what has been the reality for a long time. It involves a lengthy process ending with the Queen granting an ‘Order of Council’ . We will be able to make provision for ongoing burial of cremated remains and for internment in an existing family grave. Once closed the responsibility for maintenance will fall to the Local Authority instead of the church. Ownership remains vested in the Rector of the day. If there are any points you feel we should take note of before beginning this process (eg informal arrangements reached years ago!) please feel free to write to me, outlining what they are. Coffee Morning The monthly coffee morning has changed venue this month. July and August have swapped so do look at the notice board under the railway arch for that and all information about church matters. Family Service. Sunday 13th July at 4 pm. There will be no family service in August, they resume on the second Sunday of September [14th ] at 4pm. ‘Sunday School’ is now well re-established in the 9.30 service with the children leaving for the school after the first hymn and returning towards the end of the service, usually to tell us what they have been doing. Newcomers are always welcome. The Produce Stall continues on Saturday mornings under the railway arch from 9.30 until it’s all sold! All contributions of produce welcome, as are buyers! The Exeter Diocese is one thousand one hundred years old in 2009. There will be many celebrations, not least our own as it ties in with our 600th anniversary of the dedication of the ‘new’ tower in 1409. There will be a book illustrating all of the churches in Devon with brief description, published cont Cont to coincide with the
anniversary. The price will be £7.99 but we can arrange early orders at £6. If
you would like to place a firm order for this book on this very special occasion
please phone 278594 and I will reserve a copy at the The Bike Ride or Stride day for this year is on Saturday 13th September. Churches all over Devon open for refreshments as you clock up as many visits as you can in the day. It is a sponsored event and half the money goes to the church of your choice and half to the Devon Historic Churches Trust which supports all denominations with grants towards building upkeep. See www.devonhistoricchurches.co.uk and click on events.

Under the new service every household in the East Devon District will receive a wheeled bin for general household waste. The only reason for not receiving one is if the household is unable to accommodate one due to access problems. If you believe you fall into this category you can request an alternative gull sack collection service. Under the new service, we will only collect non-recyclable waste contained in wheeled bins. Black sacks left out at kerbside will not be collected except for the period over Christmas when householders will be able to put out one additional bag of waste. If you are elderly/disabled and can’t manage a wheeled bin? The council recognises that, for some people, putting wheeled bins and recycling boxes out for collection is outside their capability. Therefore, an enhanced service is provided for the infirm and disabled following an assessment being completed by a Council officer to confirm a genuine need. Assistance will not be provided if there is an able bodied person living at a property or if neighbours are willing to assist. Householders who currently receive assistance will continue to do so under the new service. Smaller wheeled bins, roughly half the size of the standard bins, will also be available for households that request them. What if I don’t have room or access for a wheeled bin? The council recognises that some residents will be unable to accommodate a wheeled bin. These householders can request a gull sack collection service. The Council will supply the sacks subject to an assessment by Council officers. Smaller bins will also be available on request.
DCC Publication Our afternoon film shows will start again on Wednesday 24th September in a new venue: the refurbished Methodist Hall. Aimed at those of all ages who can’t or prefer not to attend our Friday Film Nights - and, indeed, members who do, but enjoy the relaxed and friendly atmosphere – the Midweek Matinées will this season also be under new management. Martin Fisher is bringing his encyclopaedic knowledge of classic films, from British studios in particular, to the task and looks forward to welcoming old and new friends to the events. To open the season, he has chosen (Singin in the Rain starring Gene Kelly, Debbie Reynolds and Donald O'Connor
