ITEMS OF NOTE from the Parish Council June Meeting

PARISH COUNCIL GRANTS - The Parish Council has adopted a new system for giving grants to Village Groups.  From this year onwards, any Group that would like to apply for a grant will need to apply to the Clerk.  Grants will not be given unless a formal application is made. Application forms will be available shortly and details will be posted on the Parish Notice boards.

PARKING ENFORCEMENT is now a civil matter and is handled by Officers of Devon County Council.  WPCSO Sarah Trayhurn explained that the police can now only deal with obstruction matters. Other parking enforcement will be dealt with under the new regime.  Sarah warned that DCC Officers may not have the community spirit that WPCSO's have shown and tickets may be issued without warning. Illegal parkers should beware.

DRAINAGE PROBLEMS have shown themselves in the Village again recently due to heavy rainfall. Cllr Brian Cotton has been very busy in trying to achieve some action by Devon County Council. All being well, works should start very soon.  This may mean some disruption to traffic but that will be short-lived and a small price to pay to get a long term solution.

MAGISTRATES SERVICE - The Parish Council has received an informative presentation regarding Devon's Lay Magistrates Service.  The bench is always looking for new magistrates and they can come from any walk of life.  The minimum age is 18 and the maximum age for joining is 65.  Magistrates are the first court for all criminal cases with about 5% of these going on to the Crown Court If you think that you can help your community in this way you can contact the Magistrates Office in Exeter or you can apply online by visiting http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/CrimeJusticeAndTheLaw/Becomingamagistrate/index.htm
