PARISH CHURCH

Late last year I saw an old programme, from the seventies, for a village event built around the close relationship the village has with the sea.  One of the main events during the weekend was a service held on the slipway and a blessing of all the boats.  The date chosen for the weekend was ‘Sea Sunday’ and we thought it was an old tradition which should be revived………So there will be a service to mark Sea Sunday on 6th July at 3 pm, adjacent to the Lympstone Sailing Club.  The singing will be led by the Lympstone South West Telecoms Training Band, and the speaker will be the Revd. Geoffrey Wrayford.  This is an occasion for all the family – and an opportunity to remember those who work at sea, all rescue services, and to thank God for the enjoyment we get from activities on the water.  So do come along!

The long awaited provision for children’s worship and activities during services will be starting soon.  The target date is Sunday 15th June during the 9.30 service.  The children will come accompanied to church and then proceed to the school, returning before the end of the service.  We want to avoid calling it ‘Sunday School’ but everyone knows what we mean when we use that term.  What it will be called will be decided by the group once it is established.  Look out for notices on the display in church.       Come along, you will be very welcome.

The Sunday morning ‘eight o’clockers’ have been enjoying breakfast at Shear’s Place after the service.  They invite you to join them for breakfast on Sunday June 22nd at 9 am.  Please sign up on the notice at the back of church so the correct number of meals will be produced.

The Produce Stall, which is always full of home made and home grown food,  begins on Saturday morning from 28th June for 10 weeks.  Please support it.

As for the rest of the month it’s all the usual things, Family Service second Sunday 8th at 4pm, coffee morning on the last Tuesday and full details of services on the notice board under the railway arch.

MORNING STARS IN LYMPSTONE

They come from the Caucasian Mountains, and their name means Morning Stars. Mtiebi are a group of Georgian singers who have inspired audiences all over the world with their incredible polyphonic singing and their energetic dances. Georgian singing is considered some of the finest in the world and is classified as World Heritage music. Mtiebi keep their performances as authentic as possible, with members wearing a variety of regional costumes and singing in the authentic style. Lympstone Entertainments has managed to secure one of their concerts on their current tour of Britain, which will take place in the church on Sunday 22nd June at 8pm. For singers there is also a voice workshop in the Village Hall in the afternoon.

THE LYMPSTONE MURDERER

Did you know that one of the knights who murdered Thomas à Becket came from Lympstone? Well, he didn’t actually live in the village, but he owned it. Sir William de Tracey was Lord of the Manor here in 1170 when he helped to murder the Archbishop in Canterbury Cathedral. The story is told in T. S Eliot’s famous play, Murder in the Cathedral, and the Lympstone Players will be presenting a dramatised reading in Lympstone Church on Friday, 27th June at 7.30 pm. Admission is free, but a collection will be taken in aid of the church.

NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH

Yes, we have a ‘low crime’ Village so lets keep it that way. ‘Neighbourhood Watch’ has been proven to be a deterrent to crime so, if you live in an area that is not already covered, why not set up a scheme now. I have recently started one for part of Longmeadow Rd. together with Harefield Drive, it is easy to do and virtually at no cost. (In our case a one off payment of £2 each to cover the cost of the signs.) If you are interested and would like to find out more please contact me on 278631 or our Police CSO, Sarah Trayhurn, on 08452 777444. Come on, do your bit to combat crime!

 OPEN GARDEN

On the 27th and 29th of June the garden at The Lookout, Sowden Lane, Lympstone is open for the first time for charity as part of the National Garden Scheme. Featured last September in the BBC’s Open Garden Series, this 2 acre, wildlife friendly estuary-side garden has been created over the last five years by its garden designer/owner, out of the derelict former mussel purification station site.  Beachcombing finds compliment the naturalistic style seaside planting designed to harmonise the garden with its surroundings. A short circular walk leads you from an area of jungly planting through a wild flower meadow, past a pond, through a copse and along the river bank to a Mediterranean courtyard, with numerous places to stop and admire the views.

Refreshments and plants are on sale. Before and after photos are on display, showing how the site has evolved (the owners would love to hear from anyone with old photos of the site)

Some narrow gravel paths, steep slopes and steps so not suitable for the disabled or toddlers. Stout footwear recommended!  Adults £2.50, children free but must be closely supervised at all times. Please walk or cycle as no car parking on site. Open from 2–5pm on Friday 27th June & 2-6pm on Sunday 29th June.

 LYMPSTONE CRICKET CLUB

Lympstone Cricket Club against Heads and Quicks at Newton St Cyres 14th May

20:20 match, with compulsory retirement at 30 runs and 4 overs maximum per bowler. Lympstone batted first and reached 77 before the first wicket fell. The openers did very well: Greg Richmond - 30 (retired); Jonno Lee - 30 (retired); Robin Tolson - 29; Toby Ingham - 27, not out and scoring off every ball. Lympstone finished after 20 overs on 147 for 4, our highest score since the Club was re-formed in April 2007.

Heads and Quicks only did slightly better – but enough: 148 for 3 off 18 overs! Greg Richmond was our outstanding bowler with 2 wickets for 10 runs from 4 overs. We just lost but, never mind, such a good batting performance was very encouraging and we look forward to the next match, whenever the weather permits.

LYMPSTONE@PLAY IS CALLING BUDDING PHOTOGRAPHERS

L@P are planning their fundraising calendar early this year and wondered if there are any kind people out there who have any photographs of Lympstone or its events which they would be happy to let us use for our calendar. If at all possible please could the photos be digital ones and they can be put on a disk or emailed to us at Jane's email moffatt@gullifordfm.fsnet.co.uk. This year it is kindly being organised by Andrew Laney- Hubbard so if you have a disk, could you drop it into him.
