Never mind the quantity, note the quality!  The number of French may have dropped to 27, but beautiful weather, good planning organisation & execution by a team of people too numerous to list here but which trebled the size of the Committee, produced a marvellous 3-day event.

Our friends from Biéville-Beuville arrived midday Thursday and swiftly dispersed to their respective host families.  On Friday, Lympstonians filled empty seats on their coach as we spent a relaxed few hours at Lyme Regis including an excellent lunch at the Harbour Inn.

As hosts this year - we return to Biéville-Beuville next year - our main party piece in the Village Hall on Saturday evening was a Dinner, Entertainment and Dance with the theme of The Moulin Rouge, Toulouse Lautrec and Paris of the 1890’s.

Thanks to all involved including Lympstone Art Group members who enthusiastically added to the ambiance by painting pictures for us.Heather Redding sang Edith Piaf and ‘Les Girls’ of the Committee danced the Can Can in full regalia!  Not a pretty sight but entertaining – apparently!

Biéville-Beuville’s twinning President Jean Badaire, announced a forthcoming formal mayoral invitation to Lympstone Parish Council & Lympstone twinners to meet with them and the twinners of Margetshöchheim in Biév ille-Beuville this autumn.

Our next event will be an open garden party on Monday 14th July celebrating Bastille Day.

LYMPSTONE PRIMARY SCHOOL PTFA SUMMER BALL

This year the summer ball will take place on Saturday 21st June (this is a change from 28th June as previously stated, in order to avoid clashing with the Exe Regatta).  This is the fifth time we have organised a summer ball for the village and we hope that this year’s event will be an even greater success than those held previously. Our aim, as before, is to include all people from the village, not just those directly associated with the school.

The event starts at 7pm with canapés and a complimentary drink, followed by dinner.

There will be live music from the band “White Spirit” and a disco. Tickets are £21 each and available from Elda Caldarone who lives in The Old Newsagents (opposite The Swan). Tables will be for a maximum of 8 people so groups can book together, but individuals and couples are equally welcome.

The purpose of the event is to raise money for the village school, but in doing so we hope to provide a great night out in the village. There will be a raffle and an auction during the evening but rest assured that the time spent on this will be kept short.

The two Resolutions to be voted on at the AGM were discussed. The first was: "This meeting asks HM Government to urge the EU to ban bottom trawling, which causes catastrophic loss of marine life".  Our President, Jo Cotton, gave information supplied by the NFWI Public Affairs Dept and after discussion it was agreed to let her vote at her discretion after hearing all the arguments for and against.  The second one: "In view of the adverse effect on families of the imprisonment of people with severe mental health problems, this meeting urges HM Government to provide treatment and therapy in a more appropriate and secure residential environment" was less contentious and all members were in favour.

Margaret Woodland then demonstrated a very effective, minimalist tall flower arrangement and Robbie Eyre showed us how to make unusually covered containers for simple arrangements.  Maura Johnson read her excellent poem which was awarded fourth place at the Spring Council prose/poetry competition last month.  Lympstone's entry for the hat made from recycled materials, made by Robbie Eyre, won the Spring Group meeting competition.  After tea Diana Winterforde-Young gave a humorous report on the recent Spring Council meeting, followed by

Diana de la Rue's enthusiastic report on her social history course at Denman College.

Exe Estuary Forum Spring 2008

The Changing Face of the Exe

The Exe Estuary Forum is your chance to get involved with the management of the Estuary with opportunities to discuss issues that affect the Estuary, hear the latest news and ask questions.  What’s more is you get to decide the content of the forum making it even more tailored to your interests and use of the Estuary.  The afternoon’s workshop sessions will be entirely guided by your suggestions and ideas. If you would like to attend please call 01392 382236.   Date: Saturday 7th June Time: 11.00 - 4.00  Location: Lympstone Marine Barracks (To Be Confirmed). Entry: Tickets will be issued on a first come first served basis.  Tickets are free and can be applied for by contacting the Exe Estuary Officer.  We would like to request that organisations and clubs limit their attendance to 5 in order to allow all groups to have the opportunity to attend.

Presentations: The morning presentations will examine the changes that we are seeing to the shape and structure of the Exe which are affecting such elements as flood defence and navigation.  The presentations will discuss the historical and ecological processes, which cause these changes as well as the future implications for the Estuary.

Workshops:      After lunch the forum will be divided into smaller groups to discuss specific topics relating to the Estuary. Each group will have half an hour to discuss their topic and suggest ideas of how it can be managed and where improvements can be made.  After a short break there will be a second opportunity to attend a separate workshop.  The forum will then reconvene and a spokesperson for each group will present a summary of the discussion to the forum.

Have Your Say: Please tell us which 3 topics you would like to suggest for discussion at the afternoon workshops. Only 1 ticket will be sent per reply, please copy and complete separately for each additional ticket required giving the name of the individual attending.

LYMPSTONE FILM SOCIETY

At our first General Meeting in April (not an AGM because, hard as it is to believe, the Society has only been in existence for ten months or so) all reports of activity to date were very positive, and plans for the future highly promising: eight Film Nights in the season beginning in September; our new screens in operation; more Silver Screenings (possibly in the Methodist Hall; watch this space); the start of our Young Film-makers project.  And changes on the committee too; founder member John Welton steps down due to other commitments, while up step Terry Barnes-Heath, Martin Fisher and Jill Wilson.

The best measure of the success of LFS is the fact that the vast majority of the original members have rejoined, even before the new season's programme has been settled.  After signing up those patient souls on the waiting list, it seems certain that we'll be up to the membership limit by opening night on 12 September.  If you've been thinking of joining, ring membership secretary Helen Dimond (223433) without delay.
