PURPOSES I created this site partially as a public information service and partially for training purposes and I am still experimenting with its contents, organisation and different page formats.  Every month I spend about 2 or 3 hours updating the site with roughly 5 new pages and a similar number of updated pages. Kids stuff is in addition to this. It receives about 200 hits a day from all over the world.

SIZE After six years, Lympstone.Org has about 1000 pages using 20Mbyte on UK2.NET and it is still growing.  A third of this is the Lympstone Herald archive and another third is the pages created by the children about their school. Much emphasis has been placed on having fast download times with each page having a maximum size of less than 50k bytes and averaging 20k.  A map of the site together with demonstrations of some of the techniques used in building it will appear some time in the future.

TOOLS USED This site was created and maintained using Microsoft FrontPage which accept pages created with Word (which children learn at school) and cells from Microsoft Excel, very easily.  Most photos are shrunk to the 10 to 20K range in jpeg format using Microsoft Photo Editor, so picture quality is not high.  Cute is used for file transfers between pages held on disk and the internet as it is also easy to use and simpler than the FTP aspects of FrontPage when only updating one or two pages.  These easy to use programs have avoided the need for any programming although the children have learnt a few aspects of HTML.

LIMITATIONS FOR CHILDREN  Having had about 500 children hours on various aspects of page creation I have found that web pages used in this context are limiting for children who wish to experiment with colours and cartoon-like art - but we are working on this.  It will probably be necessary to bring in extra tools to 'take pictures' of their art and condense and then load these.  Recording then manipulating/compressing sounds has been a recent addition to the children's' activities.
