Lympstone Mummers at local pubs

December 20, 2014 @ 8:30 pm

Lympstone’s Mummers play, traditionally performed each Christmas by men of the village, has a long history, the script having been handed down over many generations.  The origins of the Lympstone play are truly lost in the mists of time, but a clue may lie in the verse sung at the play’s end: the song “Tom Bowling” would have been well known to Lympstone fishermen some 200 years ago.

Our present day troupe will once again take the play around the village pubs on the Saturday before Christmas (December 20th).  If the Saddlers is open it will be the first at 8.30 pm. Then it’s the Redwing at 9 pm and the Swan at 9.30 pm to arrive at the Globe by about 10 pm.  A collection will be taken for the Children’s Society.
