Yes it is now a year since Lympstone acquired its new web site!

As far as we can tell things are going well – but we are not complacent. We are now receiving over 2,000 “hits” every month with over 40% of these being repeat visits.

The “What’s On” pages and “Village News” are the most popular with “Businesses” not far behind. Certainly the site came to the fore in informing the community on the progress with the Courtlands Appeal and we are now getting more interactive comments.

But there are areas where we feel we are not getting the benefit from this valuable resource. The “Noticeboard” is not exploited – this is a FREE medium on which you can publish your personal items for sale and wanted – lost and found and also personal/public announcements. Think of it just like a notice board under the Strand railway bridge. The “Gallery” will be having a re-vamp – it is a popular feature but does not give us enough flexibility to display all your photographs. What else would you like? It’s your web site let us know what you would like added, deleted or just improved.

Thank you to all who contribute and those behind the scenes who make it happen – it is your web site and ultimately its success depends on YOU.

As your local hospice charity caring for terminally ill people and their families, Hospiscare relies on gifts in wills and understand how important a will is to give peace of mind that the people and causes close to your heart are looked after in the future. Although we know a will secures our loved ones’ future it’s something we put off. Yet it’s so important for everybody to have will and keep it up to date so there are no unnecessary problems for loved ones.

In reality making or updating a will is straightforward and Hospiscare Will Week makes it even simpler. Over 30 Devon solicitors will write or update your will for free so you can make a donation to Hospiscare instead.

This opportunity is open to everyone. Simply choose a participating solicitor and make an appointment. Your most local solicitors include:

Exmouth, Everys

Nicholas Strong, 01395 264384

Exmouth, Ford Simey

Rebecca Tribble, 01395 272241

Exmouth, Vine Orchards

Gordon Pring, 01395 273035

For further information please phone Susie on 01392 688020 or go to www.hospiscare.co.uk for the full list.

At the W.I. meeting on April 4th, instead of a guest speaker there was a much-anticipated ‘home-grown’ entertainment. This began with a hearty singalong accompanied by Doreen Flowers on piano. Next, Jo Cotton expertly showed us how to compose an Easter Basket flower arrangement, using spring blooms from hedgerow and garden. Then Joyce Perry brought alive a piece of local history, taking the role of Mrs. Perriam in the monologue ‘The Powder Monkey’ by Ralph Rochester.

Finally, the 9-member WI Drama Group performed a dramatic presentation of Martin Armstrong’s poem ‘Miss Thompson Goes Shopping’. The audience was hugely amused by the various shopkeepers encountered by Miss Thompson in her day’s ‘retail therapy’ 1920s-style. Members will long remember, with delight, Maura Johnson as ‘Miss Thompson’, Joan Denison as ‘Mrs Watson’, Diana Winterton-Young as ‘Miles the Fishmonger’ and Bobby Brunt as ‘Wren the Chemist’, ably supported by Jan Waldren, Ann Briers, Adrienne Hebdige, Dorothy Livingstone and Terry Scott. Drama Group leader Jill Hearn had recently retired after 26 years, and Maura Johnson read a warm tribute in verse, and presented a gift and flowers on behalf of the members.

In a short business meeting President Anne Frampton thanked members for their love and support in her recent bereavement. Secretary Jo Cotton gave reminders to members including-

The regular Litter Pick on 30th April at 2.30pm starting a the bottom of Church Road; The Work of a Forensic Scientist’, a talk by Dr. John Tribell at Kennaway House, Sidmouth, on 11th/25th May; A walk at Slapton Ley Nature Reserve on 19th/23rd June.

The next WI meeting, at 2.30pm on Wednesday 2nd May in the Village Hall, will be the Resolutions/Annual Meeting. Members were reminded that although the current committee was willing to continue, there was a need for a new Treasurer.

On the 17th March a pink Muddy Fox BMX bike was stolen from outside a property in the Strand. It is a very bright pink so if anybody has any information please contact Police quoting KE/12/631.

On the 25th March a child’s scooter was stolen from outside a property on Glebelands. The scooter is very distinctive as the wheel is luminous green with a purple coloured centre. If anybody has any information, please contact Police on 101 quoting KE/12/686. Can I ask all parents to check their gardens/shed to make sure that these bikes have not been picked up or appeared in gardens.

A reminder to all dog walkers – please pick up after your dogs as I am receiving complaints from residents. It is particularly bad in the area of Candys Field. I have tasked the dog warden to attend and issue tickets where necessary.

I will be attending the Sailing Club, in company with an Officer from Special Branch on the 27th April to launch Boat Watch and do a presentation on Operation Kracken. I look forward to meeting members and hopefully introducing this scheme to Lympstone.

The inhabitants of Lympstone are signing up to be photographed in front of their houses for the Jubilee project. Some 100 households have already volunteered, and the photographers have started work.

Here is your chance to go down in history, for it is the Lympstone History Society that will become the custodian of these pictures down the generations, enabling your descendents to look back through the mists of time, to envisage your life in the Diamond year of 2012.

We are not just looking for those of you who live in historic houses. We want inhabitants of cottages and bungalows, old and new, of flats and mansions, terraces and semis, modern estates as well as cob and thatch, Jackson’s Meadow as well as The Manor House, those born in the village as well as the newest of newcomers, those who are renting as well as home owners, the young, the middle aged and the old. Lympstone is notable for its variety, of people and of houses, and we hope to show just how varied it is at the beginning of the 21st century.

The more of you who face the photographers, the better representation of the village this archive will be. Join the swelling throng, don’t be left out, help us to record our village at a particular moment in its history – and smile, please!

To be part of this Jubilee community portrait, please let us know that you are willing to be photographed in front of your house by emailing johngc66@gmail.com or phoning 01395 277 007. Or you can fill in a form at the Post Office if you would prefer.

Whichever way, do it now.
