Time & the tide have had a huge impact on one corner of Lympstone over the years. Come and see for yourself how the ‘Old Mussel Farm’ at Sowden End, built in the 1920s to save the village’s ailing shellfish industry, has been transformed from a derelict site into a wildlife friendly, family garden over the last 10 or so years.

On the 7th & 9th of June the Michelmore are opening their garden at The Lookout, Sowden Lane, Lympstone for the 6th year as part of the National Garden Scheme which raises millions annually for caring charities including Macmillan, Marie Curie and Help The Hospices.

Over 3000 people have visited the garden openings, helping to raise nearly £15,000. This has benefited both NGS charities & Lympstone fundraising. Jackie & Will hope to raise money for the Village Hall Refurbishment & Church Renovation Fund from their cream teas again this year.

Featured on TV & in the local press, this 2-acre garden sits with its toes in the water near the mouth of the Exe Estuary. Flotsam and jetsam finds sit amongst relaxed, naturalistic style seaside planting to give that washed up from the beach feel. Over 200 varieties of sea-trialled salt & drought tolerant plants enjoy the challenges of coastal living.

A short circular walk leads you from an area of jungly planting through a wild flower meadow, past a pond, through a copse and along the riverbank to a Mediterranean courtyard, with numerous places to stop and take in the views and salty air.

There are refreshments & plants on sale, a giant sandpit…with buckets & spades provided and a photographic display showing how the site has evolved from the 1920s to the present day. This year Love Local are presenting a range of coastally inspired, locally made gifts with a percentage of the takings going to support Devon Wildlife Trust’s Bee Campaign

Due to some narrow gravel paths, steep slopes and steps disabled access is limited and stout footwear recommended!

Adults £4, children free but must be closely supervised at all times. No car parking on site but in adjacent field if weather permits & plenty of bike parking. Sorry no dogs.

Open 2–5pm on Friday 7th & 2-6pm on Sunday 9th June. Full details on NGS . Also open by appointment from May to October for clubs, societies & groups, details on Lympstone.org

The Friends of The Furry Dance Committee wish to hear your views and ideas on the future format of the annual Lympstone Furry Dance.

Each year there seem to be isolated incidences which mar the event for some people, with this in mind and after the recent events of last year we feel it is time for a change. We have discussed some proposals at a recent committee meeting which we would like to share and discuss with you and welcome your input.

If the Furry Dance was held in the afternoon we feel this would make it a more family friendly event. This in turn would mean the events would be over by 5.30ish and hopefully eliminate alcohol fuelled issues.

Our proposals are to move the events from Candy’s Field and replace this with a pannier market/stalls in Chapel Road and children’s entertainment/workshop in the village.

We welcome the clubs and societies of Lympstone to join in and support what we hope will be a positive change to the format of this annual event and we hope to encourage more local community involvement.

Thank you for supporting us and we look forward to a positive outcome.

Between the 7th and 9th December a quantity of copper piping and a copper cylinder was stolen from a property in the area of Highcliffe. If anyone has any information regarding this theft, please contact the Police quoting KE/12/2898. If you see any person or vehicle acting suspiciously in the area, please ring Police on 101.

If you would like to sign up to our community messaging system, please contact me on the details below. This allows you to receive messages via email or telephone on what is happening in your area. It is a free service and a simple form to fill out.

I hope you have all enjoyed a lovely Christmas and you may even have been lucky enough to receive some lovely gifts! A few crime prevention tips:

Make a note of any serial numbers/ distinguishing marks on high value property. These items can be registered for free on www.immobilise.com. This is a database which the police will access if stolen property is recovered.

Jewellery – we recommend that you take a photo of any pieces of jewellery and keep them safe. This helps us to identify your property should it be stolen.

The police do offer a free property marking service where we can mark your property with your postcode, If you are interested in this, please contact me on the details below to discuss.

And finally…

When you put out your recycling for collection, please be mindful that discarded boxes give burglars an idea of what you had for Christmas. Try to crush them and put them in the bin or alternatively take to the recycling centre.

I would like to wish you a very Happy New Year and I look forward to working with you in 2013.

Best wishes
