Lympstone in top 50 best places to live in Britain

Lympstone has been named as one of the top 50 Best Places to Live in the Countryside by The Sunday Times. The entry was as follows:-

Don’t expect to put your feet up here — a film society, a ukulele group, a boxing team and a men’s shanty club are among the scores of voluntary organisations making this one busy community.

The 2,000 residents hardly have time to appreciate the period houses, thatched cottages, mansions and occasional waterfront villas overlooking the River Exe. You can cycle or catch the train to Exeter, eight miles north, for fabulous views of the estuary; village sailors take their boats south towards Exmouth.

Lympstone has a church, a post office, a shop, a preschool and a primary school, and could soon be a fine-dining destination — Michael Caines, of the two-Michelin-starred Gidleigh Park, is planning to open a hotel in the village. For more modest fare, try the four pubs and the dog-friendly cafe. Don’t worry if you hear the odd gunshot — it’s the Royal Marines base a mile away.
