LYMPSTONE MEMORIES 3
The third and final volume of memories of life in Lympstone is to be launched at The Swan on the morning of Saturday 17th October, from 10.30am until midday. Twelve more stories from villagers past and present have been researched by Lympstone writer Tony Day, for Lympstone History Society, so that they can be available for everyone to enjoy.
“I’ve been fascinated to learn about the laundry that was once in Underhill, just down from where I live now”, says Tony, “and to read tales of past characters like Butcher Bolt, Jerusalem John and village rascal Marcel. A description of groomed and decorated Shire horses from the farms taking Sunday School children on their annual treat is so well written, and wartime larks with the Marines made me chuckle.”
Joining Tony at the launch will be Village Archivist Mary Turner, who sourced much of the original material, and book designer Sue Mildenhall, who has again used local artist Louise Banks’ paintings for the book’s cover. New contributors to the latest collection include Mary Doak, Doreen Flowers, Ursula Perry, Kathleen Stephens and Mick Cornish. Some of their work has recorded over the past forty years, but other originals were written up to a hundred years ago. All three volumes of Lympstone Memories will be available at the launch, as will other books published by
Lympstone History Society.
