Lympstone’s cricket team have got off to a confident start this summer, under the leadership of new captain Ben Ingham (that’s not our District Councillor, but Jason’s lad). Only faltering in the opening match at Newton Poppleford thanks to an insistence that everyone bowl two overs, the villagers have triumphed in their next three matches, all away from home. The Woodbury win was sweet revenge for a 10 wicket drubbing in the last local derby two years’ ago, as this time Lympstone not only posted their best ever total of 176-6, but also won by their widest ever margin, restricting the home side to 68-4. At the idyllic Killerton ground Jamie Cooke led the way with an unbeaten 67 to another big score of 158, which was 50 too much for Nomads, bowled out with three overs to spare. Next up were Sunset at the Coaver Club, whose 124 was not enough, Lympstone only needing 14 of their 20 overs to sail past the target. The villagers’ strength this season has been mainly with the bat, Jamie Cooke, Charlie and Miles Lenygon and George Greenaway regularly posting good scores in quick time. With the likes of Webster and Tolson yet to shine, the season looks promising – some tidier bowling would make our village very difficult to beat indeed!
