East Devon district council will be challenging its residents to try and live plastic free. For one week in June 6th to 12th June we will be encouraging everyone to have a go at making some plastic free swaps. It’s practically impossible to live plastic free but we want to help make it a bit easier by putting on some webinars to help you. We will be working with local zero waste blogger Sarah Allen to share her tips on how to live as plastic free as possible. She has loads of advice, ideas and strategies to help you reduce the amount of plastic you use, whilst watching the pennies.
We know in East Devon that are residents are really good at recycling and we often are featured in the top 10 of districts in the UK for our recycling rates. We aren’t against plastic, plastic is massively important, it plays a critical role in our food industry, keeping food products fresh and safe to eat for an extended period of time. For example an unpackaged cucumber has a shelf life of about a week, one wrapped in plastic will last on average 3 weeks.
However we do have alternatives, it is possible to buy products that aren’t wrapped in plastic, maybe try your local zero waste shop or look for unpackaged alternatives when doing your weekly shop.
There will be 3 drop in sessions called “how on Earth sessions” held on zoom to allow you to ask questions and get some great advice from our living plastic free champion Sarah.
