LYMPSTONE ENVIRONMENTAL ACTION

Nov 1, 2024

The Lympstone Herald has a new section, which is about sharing positive environmental action news from across Lympstone parish. We hope the articles will inspire others and help to strengthen a community of like-minded people with a passion for enjoying, protecting and enhancing our local wildlife and natural environment. So, whether you’re young or old, working on your own or as part of a group, we’d love to hear what you’re up to. Please send articles to wildaboutlympstone@gmail.com at least 2 days before the next Lympstone Herald deadline (see https://www.lympstone.org/lympstone-herald)

New homes for swifts
48 new swift boxes have been installed in Lympstone’s church tower by the Devon Swift Project. Swift populations have decreased by 60% over the past 20 years, mainly due to construction methods and land management, and we’re very excited that our church is helping to support the comeback of these wonderful birds! More news on this in the new year.

Wild About Lympstone (WAL)
The WAL group is already getting excited for Christmas! We’ve started planning our nature-themed Christmas tree as part of the Church Christmas Tree Festival, 1st-8th December. Please feel free to bring along an ornament of natural materials and add it to our tree during this week. We’re also planning a couple of events for the New Year. The first, a social get-together for all those interested in positive environmental action in Lympstone. We’ll be celebrating and raising awareness about all the incredible efforts already underway in the village, whilst also helping to develop a more connected community and shared vision for environmental action in Lympstone.

Our second event will be on 17 May. This will include another of the Allotment Group’s highly successful plant giveaway events, as well as a range of wider nature-based activities in collaboration with individuals and groups in the village. Initial ideas include the creation of new wildlife friendly spaces, water quality testing, climate change resilience workshops, nature health and wellbeing activities, wildlife walks. The day will reflect the 5 Ways to Wellbeing With Nature:
• Connect – community action for nature.
• Take notice – being in the moment; developing a closer relationship with nature.
• Give – compassion and care for nature.
• Be active – connecting actively with nature.
• Learn – about nature and our interconnected relationship with it.
If you ‘re interested to know more, or get involved with any of WAL’s activities, please contact us at wildaboutlympstone@gmail.com.
Best wishes, The WAL Team
