Positive Lympstone

Many of you will have noticed that we have been having a tidy up of the bank leading up to the station. A lot of work had previously taken place by existing volunteers in the village. Currently we are battling with nettles, brambles and ivy, managing to uncover some of the surviving plants – not quite the ‘Lost gardens of Heligan’ but very satisfying! We have also spruced up the planters on the station, and are hoping to start planting more shrubs and perennials on the bank in September. We are a small group and if we want to complete the tidy up and more importantly, maintain the bank, we desperately need more volunteers. You can give as much or as little time as you can offer and no horticultural knowledge required. Volunteers to help with general weeding, pruning, dead heading and watering the planters would be welcome, as well as those who like the challenge of clearing brambles. We have a WhatsApp group and volunteers can message one another to say when they are free/planning to work on the bank, so if you are able, you can meet up.
The bank is owned by Great Western Railway (GWR) and there is a requirement to attend a 20 minute safety briefing with the volunteer coordinator. In return, you receive a hessian bag with goodies, including an insulated water bottle and a few tools. I have arranged for the GWR volunteer coordinator to deliver a briefing on Thursday 18 July at 6pm by the bank. If you cannot make this date but are still interested in joining the group, please let me know and I will look to organise another briefing in early September.
