2025 was another exciting year for Wild About Lympstone (WAL). We held a second 1000 plant-giveaway event in partnership with Heathfield Allotment Trust as part of our 17th May Lympstone Environmental Action Day. We also launched our new Wildlife Wellbeing Walks. The first one was over-subscribed and took place on 8th November – one of our rare sunny autumn days!
We’re now looking forward to 2026. We’re exploring several new opportunities that will allow us to continue with our mission to make small changes that deliver a big difference for our local wildlife. By working with other groups and individuals in the village, we aim to continue expanding Lympstone’s ‘wilder community’. We’ll keep you posted on our plans as the year unfolds and do let us know if you’d like to join our WAL mailing list to keep abreast of our work.
One of our new initiatives will be WAL’s ‘Gardening for Wildlife’ Award. Designed to sit alongside Devon Wildlife Trust’s Wildlife Garden Award, this will form part of Lympstone Garden Club’s Annual Show in August. More information will follow in next month’s Herald, but a heads-up for those already thinking about garden plans for the year ahead. The award is designed to encourage and celebrate gardening projects and practices that have a positive impact on the wildlife in your garden. All entries are welcome however small or large (anything from a window box or a single pot of herbs, to a new pond), new projects or expansion of existing work. There will be two beautiful locally created trophies for the overall adult and child (under 16) winner.
Our next Wildlife Wellbeing Walk will take place on Saturday 7th February, meeting 10.30am at the Swan pub.
We’re a friendly group of local people who enjoy walking, wildlife spotting and the joy of connecting to nature. In a world that is moving ever faster, it feels especially important to take the time to feel the slower rhythm of nature and benefit from its free nourishing energy.
• this will be a 60-90 mins, low/ medium difficulty, circular walk;
• meeting in the village centre, close to toilets and car parking;
• open to all, but unsuitable for limited mobility (kissing gates, bridge & uneven terrain);
• families and children welcome but under 12s must be accompanied by an adult;
• well behaved dogs on short leads are welcome;
• join us afterwards for a drink or bite of lunch at the Swan pub.
This is a free event but booking is essential … to book your place and/or ask any questions please email us at wildaboutlympstone@gmail.com. You will then receive further details. And don’t worry if you can’t manage this walk, we’ll be running a spring walk in April and at least one short summer stroll, especially for those with reduced mobility.
