85 PEOPLE ATTEND PEOPLE’S EMERGENCY BRIEFING FILM IN LYMPSTONE CHURCH
As part of its eco-church remit, Lympstone Church hosted a screening of the film People’s Emergency Briefing on 12th May. The 50-minute film presents excerpts from talks given by nine experts to an invited audience of 1,200 politicians and other key leaders in Westminster Hall in November 2025. Topics ranged from weather and climate to global tipping points, impacts on food security, health, economics and national security. The experts’ clips are interspersed with the reactions of celebrities and members of the public watching the film, moderated by Chris Packham. The film brings home the immediacy of the need to address the climate and nature crises and how they are already impacting our daily lives. They leave no doubt about the gravity of the position, but the experts also emphasise that there are many positive solutions available to tackle the crises.
After watching the film, the Lympstone audience broke into small groups to discuss their reactions, followed by an open facilitated discussion. This included a panel made up of local experts and groups involved with nature, water quality and flood resilience. It was clear that the film had a big impact on people, with many saying that much of it was new to them and that it needed to reach the widest possible audience. There’s also a free screening in Exmouth on 18th June at Scott’s cinema, to which David Reed MP has agreed to attend. A clear aim of the film was to get MPs to back a national televised emergency briefing, similar to those that took place during Covid. We need to create a vision for the Parish that is holistic and catchment-based, community and partnership-led and that properly considers the significant impact of climate change.
