Shakespeare in the Garden: Measure for Measure

July 15, 2017 @ 6:00 pm - 11:00 pm

Shakespeare in the garden: ‘Measure for Measure’ SATURDAY 15TH JULY

– Gates open at 5pm, performance starts at 6pm

Bring your chairs and a picnic to this enchanting woodland setting for a performance of Shakespeare’s Measure for Measure by the young players of the Cygnet Company, directed by Artistic Director Alistair Ganley.

Cygnet Theatre is passionate about Shakespeare and strives to create accessible and relevant productions which value the text and draw out the drama and themes from the plays.

In Vienna strict codes of behaviour have not been enforced by those in power for a generation and prostitution, criminality and teenage pregnancy are rife. What will it take for the authorities to regain control of the public morality and at what cost? Cygnet’s new ensemble production of Shakespeare’s provocative dark comedy explores the line between public and private morality, faith, duty, power and hypocrisy. Now, more than ever, a theme for today.

Claudio is condemned to death, for having pre-marital sex with his girl friend, a crime in Duke Angelo’s Vienna. If you wish to save your brother’s life, then sleep with me, says Angelo to the virtuous nun, Isabella: “You must lay down the treasures of your body.”

Isabella’s dilemma is at the heart of Measure for Measure, Shakespeare’s dark comedy of lust and power, which Cygnet Theatre Company are performing in the tree-lined garden of Ellenthorpe on Saturday, 15th July.

The Cygnet’s garden productions are now a regular and much-enjoyed part of Lympstone’s summers. The talented students of this long-established Exeter drama school, directed by their principal, Alistair Ganley, will perform their latest show in the village, and demonstrate that “man, proud man, dressed in a little brief authority,” will behave in a way “to make the angels weep.”

The garden of ‘Ellenthorpe’ is located next to Underhill Car Park (EX8 5HH).

(If it’s raining the play will be performed in the Parish Church)
