Plea to dog owners

Plea to dog owners

We would ask all our local dog walkers to be careful to keep their pets under control at all times. There was a recent incident where a chicken was attacked by a dog, we believe, and was left to die.

Devon and Cornwall Police deal with livestock worrying under the Protection of Livestock Act 1953 and The Animals Act 1971. It is an offence for a dog to worry livestock on agricultural land. If the dog owner is known they may be liable for any injuries, veterinary fees or loss of earnings due to the damaged state of the livestock.

Remember to keep your dog on a lead or under sufficient control that it will not wander onto land where livestock is kept.
